Happy 74th birthday to Willie the Wildcat!
According to a Daily Northwestern article from 1942, Willie made his debut on a poster drawn by James McAndrew in 1937. Upon seeing the poster, a newspaper writer dubbed the wildcat “Willie,” and the name stuck. Willie’s debut as a live mascot occurred 10 years later. Although his physical appearance has changed over the years, he’s still as popular as ever, and getting a photo with Willie remains a rite of passage for many Northwestern students. Happy birthday, Willie!
